Arugam Bay
A right-hand point break that ranks among the best in Asia, a single sandy street behind it, and a season that runs exactly when the rest of Sri Lanka is under monsoon.
Why Arugam Bay is worth your time
Arugam Bay is the reason surfers come to Sri Lanka. Main Point is a long, consistent right-hander that peels off a rocky headland at the southern end of the bay, and when it is working between May and September it draws people from across Asia and Australia. Around it are half a dozen other breaks — Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm, Elephant Rock, Pottuvil Point — spread along thirty kilometres of coast and reachable by tuk-tuk.
The town is one sandy street with guesthouses, surf shops and restaurants along it, and it fills and empties with the season. Between October and April it is close to shut: the swell disappears, the north-east monsoon arrives and most businesses close. Turning up in January is a wasted journey.
What surprises people is how much wildlife is here. Kumana National Park, Yala's eastern neighbour, is an hour south and full of birds and elephants with almost no jeeps. Lahugala, inland, is a small park where elephants come to feed on the tank. And the lagoons behind the town hold crocodiles that you will be told about, correctly, before anyone lets you swim.
The things worth stopping for
Main Point
A long right-hand point break off the southern headland, working best from May to August. Intermediate and up — it breaks over rock and gets crowded at dawn.
Whiskey Point and Peanut Farm
Gentler breaks north and south of town, better for improvers, and reached by tuk-tuk in fifteen to thirty minutes.
Kumana National Park
An hour south, adjoining Yala's eastern boundary. Exceptional birdlife, elephants, and a fraction of Yala's jeep traffic.
Elephant Rock
A headland south of town with a break beneath it and a short scramble to the top for the whole bay at sunset.
Lahugala
A small national park inland where elephants gather to feed on the tank, particularly in the dry months. Often visible from the road.
Pottuvil lagoon
A boat trip through mangroves behind the town, with crocodiles, birds and occasionally elephants at the water's edge.
Planning your visit

Do this
- Come between May and September — outside that the town is closed
- Surf Main Point at dawn before the wind and the crowd
- Take a tuk-tuk to Whiskey Point or Peanut Farm if Main Point is beyond you
- Give Kumana a morning; it is Yala without the queue
- Break the drive from the airport — seven hours is a lot in one go
Know this first
- October to April there is no swell and most of the town shuts
- Main Point breaks over rock and is not a beginner wave
- Crocodiles live in the lagoons; do not swim in them, whatever you are told
- Wild elephants use the roads at night on this coast
How to reach Arugam Bay
Six and a half to seven hours from the terminal, and the longest transfer we run. The usual route goes via Ratnapura and Wellawaya, or through the hill country if you are coming from Ella.
We almost always suggest breaking it. Ella is four hours from Arugam Bay and makes an excellent halfway stop, and plenty of guests combine the two — tea country and hill walking, then the surf coast.

Arugam Bay — frequently asked
When is the Arugam Bay surf season?
May to September, peaking June to August. The east coast picks up the south-west monsoon swell while the rest of the island is being rained on. Outside those months the swell disappears, the north-east monsoon arrives and most of the town closes.
Is Arugam Bay suitable for beginners?
Main Point is not — it breaks over rock and gets crowded. But Whiskey Point, Peanut Farm and Baby Point nearby are gentler, and there are schools in town. Weligama on the south coast remains the easier place to start from scratch.
Is Arugam Bay worth the long drive?
If you surf and you are travelling between May and September, yes — it is one of the best point breaks in Asia and the rest of the island is under monsoon anyway. If you do not surf, the wildlife and lagoons are good but seven hours is a lot to ask.
What else is there to do at Arugam Bay?
Kumana National Park an hour south, Lahugala for elephants inland, lagoon boat trips through the mangroves, and Elephant Rock for sunset. It is not a busy sightseeing destination, which is broadly the appeal.
