Nilaveli
A long white beach on the east coast with the reefs of Pigeon Island a ten-minute boat ride offshore — and the calmest, clearest sea in Sri Lanka between May and September.
Why Nilaveli is worth your time
Nilaveli is a long, wide strip of pale sand about twenty minutes north of Trincomalee, and for four months of the year it has the best swimming conditions in Sri Lanka. The east coast runs on the opposite monsoon cycle to the west and south, so between May and September, while Galle and Mirissa are grey and rough, the sea here is flat and clear.
The main draw is a kilometre offshore. Pigeon Island National Park is two small islands surrounded by shallow coral reef, and the snorkelling there is the most accessible good reef in the country — hard coral in a couple of metres of water, reef fish in quantity, and blacktip reef sharks cruising the shallows that are entirely harmless and still startling the first time.
The reef has taken damage from bleaching and from too many visitors standing on it. Go on the first boat of the day, before the crowds, and do not touch anything. There is also a lot of empty beach north of the main hotel cluster if you want to walk.
The things worth stopping for
Pigeon Island
Ten minutes by boat. Shallow hard coral, blacktip reef sharks in the shallows, and turtles further out. Go early — by ten the boats have arrived and the water is churned.
The beach
Long, wide and pale, with room to walk for a kilometre north of the hotels without meeting anyone.
Whale and dolphin trips
Blue and sperm whales pass offshore roughly May to October, with far fewer boats than Mirissa. Trips leave from Trincomalee harbour.
Uppuveli
Fifteen minutes south, with more restaurants within walking distance if Nilaveli's isolation gets tiring.
Koneswaram Temple
Twenty-five minutes south on the cliff above Trincomalee harbour, best at dusk and reached through Fort Frederick's deer-filled grounds.
Kanniya Hot Springs
Seven shallow warm wells inland, associated in legend with Ravana. Brief, modest, and locally significant.

How to reach Nilaveli
Five and a half to six hours north-east, through Dambulla and Habarana. The Cultural Triangle sits squarely on this route, which makes a night at Sigiriya or Habarana the sensible way to break it rather than driving straight through.
Habarana is about two hours from Nilaveli, so most itineraries do the ancient cities first and drop to the coast afterwards.

Is Pigeon Island worth visiting?
For snorkelling, yes — it is the most accessible good reef in Sri Lanka, ten minutes offshore, with shallow coral, reef fish and harmless blacktip reef sharks. Go on the first boat of the day; by mid-morning it is busy and the water is stirred up.
When is the season at Nilaveli?
May to September, when the east coast is dry and the sea is glassy. November to February brings the north-east monsoon with rain and rough water, and many places close for the duration.
Is Nilaveli or Uppuveli better?
Nilaveli is longer, quieter and closer to Pigeon Island. Uppuveli is nearer Trincomalee with restaurants within walking distance. They are fifteen minutes apart, so it comes down to whether you want quiet or convenience.
How long is the drive from the airport to Nilaveli?
Five and a half to six hours. We would strongly suggest breaking it in the Cultural Triangle rather than doing it in one go — Sigiriya and Habarana are on the route and worth a night anyway.
