A one-street town wedged into a gap in the mountains, surrounded by tea, waterfalls and a railway viaduct the British built out of stone and cement because the steel never arrived.
Why Ella is worth your time
Ella was a village with a view until the backpackers found it, and it is now unmistakably a tourist town — smoothie bars, hostels, a main street that jams with tuk-tuks. Say that up front, because people arrive expecting an undiscovered mountain hamlet and it is not that. What it is instead: the single best-positioned base in the hill country, with three genuinely good walks, a famous bridge, and cold nights that feel like relief after the dry zone.
The Nine Arch Bridge, twenty minutes' walk below the town, was completed in 1921 on the Demodara loop. The story that steel supplies were diverted to the First World War and the contractor built it in brick, stone and cement instead is the one everybody tells; the result is a 91-metre span through jungle with no metal in it. Trains cross several times a day and the whole hillside knows the schedule.
Above the town, Little Adam's Peak is a 45-minute walk to a ridge with the Ella Gap falling away on one side. Ella Rock is the serious one — two to four hours return, poorly signed, and better with someone who knows the turning. Between them sit tea estates that will show you the factory floor.
The things worth stopping for
Nine Arch Bridge
Go at 6:30am if you want it without the crowd, or check the train times and stand on the viewpoint above the eastern end. The walk down through tea and jungle is half the pleasure.
Little Adam's Peak
Forty-five minutes up a stepped path, no navigation needed, and the payoff is the whole Ella Gap. The best hour of the day here is the first one, before cloud fills the valley.
Ella Rock
Two to four hours return along the railway line and then up through eucalyptus. Unsigned, easy to get wrong, and much better with a local guide — we arrange one.
The train to Ella
The Nanu Oya–Ella and Haputale–Ella sections are the ones on every postcard: tea slopes, tunnels, open doorways. Reserved seats open 30 days out and go quickly.
Tea estates and factories
Halpewatte and the smaller Newburgh estate both run tours through withering, rolling and grading. An hour, and it changes how you drink the stuff.
Waterfalls
Ravana Falls is roadside and crowded. Diyaluma, an hour away, is 220 metres and has natural pools at the top — a far better morning if you have the time.

- Bring a fleece; nights drop into the mid-teens Celsius
- Book train seats 30 days ahead, or ride unreserved third class and stand at the door

- The main street is loud and touristy; stay slightly outside it
- Leeches after rain on the Ella Rock path — socks and repellent
- Standing on the tracks for photographs is how people get killed here
- October and November bring the heaviest rain and the least visibility
How to reach Ella
Ella is five to five and a half hours from the airport by road — a long first day, and one we usually advise against. Most routes reach it from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya instead, either by vehicle over the Haputale ridge or on the train.
The train is the point for a lot of travellers, and it works cleanly on a private tour: we drop you at Kandy or Nanu Oya with a day bag, carry your luggage down by road, and meet you on the platform at Ella. You get the doorway and the tea slopes without the logistics.

How do I get to the Nine Arch Bridge?
It is a 20 to 25 minute walk from Ella town, downhill through tea and jungle, or a short tuk-tuk ride to the upper viewpoint. There is no entrance fee. Train crossing times are posted locally and change — ask at your hotel that morning rather than trusting a blog.
Is Little Adam's Peak or Ella Rock the better hike?
Little Adam's Peak if you want a great view for 45 minutes of easy walking. Ella Rock if you want a proper two-to-four hour hike and do not mind an unsigned trail. Most people with two nights do both, Little Adam's Peak on the evening they arrive and Ella Rock the next morning.
How long is the train ride to Ella?
Kandy to Ella is six to seven hours. Nanu Oya, the station for Nuwara Eliya, to Ella is about three and a half hours and contains most of the scenery. Reserved seats open 30 days before departure and sell out fast; unreserved third class is always available and is where the open doorways are.
What is the best time of year for Ella?
January to March gives the clearest mornings. June to September is also good, though afternoons cloud over. October and November are the wettest and the views often close in entirely. Evenings are cool year-round at 1,040 metres.
Is two nights in Ella enough?
Two nights is the right number: one arrival evening, one full day for the bridge, a hike and a tea factory. One night means you see the bridge and leave. Three works well if you want Diyaluma Falls or a slower pace.
