The place

What Main Point actually is

Main Point is the wave that put Arugam Bay on the surf map: a right-hand point break breaking over a reef shelf at the end of the main beach. You can see it from town and walk to it. Rough Guides calls it the biggest wave in the bay, with a coral bottom and rides of up to 400 metres on a good day.

Most rides are shorter, around 50 to 150 metres, and the wave is more down-the-line than turny on bigger days. It needs a southerly or south-easterly swell, which is why the season is roughly April to September (some guides stretch it to October or November). Outside that window it rarely fires cleanly.

It suits intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners are pointed to Baby Point and the beach breaks along the bay. If you do not surf, it is still a pleasant place for a coffee and a look at the line-up.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The line-up

Watch from the beach to see how the wave peels along the point and where surfers sit. It is easy to read from the sand.

The reef channel

There is a small break in the reef that surfers use to paddle out. It is worth noticing before you go in, if you do.

Dawn sessions

Wind tends to pick up through the day, so the best waves are often at dawn and dusk.

Baby Point and the beach breaks

Nearby breaks over sand suit beginners better and give a sense of what the bay offers without the reef.

Straight advice

Before you go

Do this

  • Watch a session from the beach before paddling out
  • Hire a board locally rather than carrying one if you only surf a few days
  • Surf at dawn and avoid the midday wind
  • Ask a local instructor about the reef channel and tides on the day
  • Use Baby Point or a beach break if you are still learning

Know this first

  • It breaks over reef; falls in shallow water can mean cuts
  • It is crowded in the peak months, especially in the morning
  • It is not a beginner wave, and bigger days are tougher still
  • Out of season it rarely fires cleanly
