The place

What Pottuvil Lagoon actually is

The Pottuvil lagoon lies behind Pottuvil town, a few kilometres north of Arugam Bay, and the standard visit is a boat or canoe trip through the mangroves. Guides place it about 7 km from Arugam Bay, around 15 minutes by tuk-tuk, which is also how you reach the departure point.

What you see is wildlife in a flat, quiet setting: crocodiles on the banks, many birds, and sometimes buffalo or monkeys. Elephants occasionally come down to the water’s edge, but this is a bonus, not a promise. Trips are usually timed for sunrise or sunset, when animals are most active and the heat is lower.

Trips run in small boats or canoes. They are a calm few hours away from the beach.

The headline sighting. You see them from the boat, at a respectful distance.

Birds
