Elephant Rock, Arugam Bay
A rock outcrop at the southern end of Arugam Bay beach with a mellow surf break beside it, reached by a rough track past crocodile country and wild-elephant range.
What Elephant Rock actually is
Elephant Rock is a large rock outcrop at the southern end of Arugam Bay beach, named for its supposed resemblance to an elephant. Rough Guides pairs it with nearby Crocodile Rock, another outcrop of the same sort; you need a tuk-tuk or 4WD to reach them.
Beside it is a boulder point break. It is a fat, soft, mellow wave, which suits big-volume boards and logs and is considered friendly for beginners and lower intermediates on normal-sized swells. Guides describe the area as a good place to watch sunrise or sunset.
It is close to town but slow to reach. The route runs out of town along Panama Road, through a neighbourhood to the end of Kudakalliya Beach, then roughly 200 metres on foot, and one guide warns of serious potholes toward the end. Treat it as a short, slightly rough excursion, not a sight in itself.
