Pasikuda
A reef-sheltered bay where the water stays waist-deep a long way out — the most forgiving beach in Sri Lanka for young children and nervous swimmers.
Why Pasikuda is worth your time
Pasikuda's bay is unusual. A reef across its mouth takes the force out of the swell, and the seabed shelves so gently that you can wade a couple of hundred metres out and still be waist-deep. There is almost no surf. For families with small children, or anyone who does not swim confidently, it is the easiest water on the island by a wide margin.
That quality attracted development, and Pasikuda is now the most resort-heavy stretch of the east coast — a row of large hotels along the bay where twenty years ago there was very little. Kalkudah, immediately north around the headland, is the quieter version with the same water and a fraction of the buildings.
The season is the other thing to understand. This coast is dry and calm from May to September, when the west and south are under monsoon. Between November and February the north-east monsoon arrives and much of the strip closes.
The things worth stopping for
The bay
Reef-sheltered, shallow and almost currentless. You can walk out a long way, which is why families end up here rather than on the south coast.
Kalkudah
Around the headland north — the same water, a longer beach and far fewer buildings. Worth the ten minutes for a quieter day.
Snorkelling on the reef
The reef across the bay mouth is reachable by boat and has recovering coral and reef fish. Ask about conditions; visibility varies.
Batticaloa
Half an hour south, with a Dutch fort, a lagoon system and the singing fish that locals will take you out to listen for.
Kayaking and paddleboarding
The flat water makes this one of the better places in Sri Lanka for both, and most hotels have gear.
Polonnaruwa
Two hours inland, and the obvious way to break the drive from the airport or the Cultural Triangle.

- Come between May and September — outside that most of the strip closes
- Walk round to Kalkudah for a quieter beach with the same water
- Break the six-hour drive from the airport with a night at Polonnaruwa
- Best for families with young children of anywhere on the island
- Go out early; the wind picks up across the bay by midday

How to reach Pasikuda
Six hours from the terminal, usually via Habarana and Polonnaruwa. The northern route is much the better of the two and puts the Cultural Triangle on your way rather than as a detour.
Almost all our guests break this drive. Polonnaruwa is two hours inland from Pasikuda and makes an obvious overnight stop, turning a punishing day into two comfortable ones.

Is Pasikuda good for families?
It is the best beach in Sri Lanka for young children. The reef across the bay mouth kills the swell, the water shelves very gradually and stays shallow a long way out, and there is essentially no surf. That combination does not exist anywhere on the south coast.
When should I visit Pasikuda?
May to September, when the east coast is dry and calm while the rest of the island is under the south-west monsoon. November to February brings the north-east monsoon and most of the strip closes.
Is Pasikuda or Kalkudah better?
Same water, different feel. Pasikuda has the resorts and the facilities; Kalkudah round the headland is longer, quieter and much less built up. Many guests stay at Pasikuda and walk to Kalkudah for the day.
How do I get to Pasikuda from the airport?
Six hours by road, normally via Habarana and Polonnaruwa. We strongly suggest breaking the journey with a Cultural Triangle night rather than doing it in a single day after a long-haul flight.
