Airport to Peradeniya: what to expect
Three hours from the terminal, six kilometres short of Kandy. Peradeniya was a royal pleasure garden before the British formalised it in 1821, and it is now the finest botanical collection in the country.
Sixty hectares inside a loop of the Mahaweli river: an avenue of royal palms planted in 1905, an orchid house, a spice garden, a cannonball tree, and a Javan fig whose canopy covers about 2,500 square metres from a single trunk. There is a suspension bridge over the river at the far end that most visitors never reach.
Two hours is the minimum. Most people give it ninety minutes as an add-on to Kandy and see perhaps a third of it.

Two hours to see it properly, three if you want the far end and the suspension bridge. Most visitors allow ninety minutes as part of a Kandy day and cover only the central section.
Is Peradeniya worth visiting?
If you have any interest in plants or simply in walking somewhere beautiful, yes — it is among the best botanical gardens in Asia. If gardens do not interest you at all, it will feel like an obligation, and Kandy has plenty else.
How far is Peradeniya from Kandy?
About six kilometres, or ten to fifteen minutes by road. It is effectively a suburb of Kandy and almost always visited as part of a Kandy stay rather than on its own.
