Airport to Adam's Peak: what to expect
Four to four and a half hours to Nallathanniya, the village at the base of the mountain, climbing through Hatton and the tea estates. The final road is narrow and winding and slow, and in pilgrimage season it is busy with buses well into the night.
Adam's Peak — Sri Pada — is climbed at night so that you reach the top for dawn. The 5,200 steps take most people three to four hours, past tea shops and shrines lit along the whole route. At the summit is a rock depression revered by Buddhists as the Buddha's footprint, by Hindus as Shiva's, by Muslims and Christians as Adam's. At sunrise the mountain throws a perfect triangular shadow across the cloud below it.

When is the Adam's Peak season?
Roughly December to May, from the Unduvap full moon to Vesak, when the path is lit and the tea shops are open. Outside that season the climb is possible but unlit, wet, and considerably less safe. April weekends and full moon nights are the busiest.
How hard is the climb?
5,200 steps and around 1,000 metres of ascent — hard on the legs rather than technically difficult, and most reasonably fit people manage it in three to four hours. Start around 2am to reach the summit for dawn. It is cold at the top, so bring a layer.
Where does the driver wait?
In Nallathanniya at the base. You climb overnight, come down mid-morning and the same driver is waiting — most guests sleep for the first hour of the onward drive, which is entirely expected.
