White-water rafting on the Kelani, rainforest either side of it, and the river where The Bridge on the River Kwai was filmed.

The route

Airport to Kitulgala: what to expect

Two and a half hours east through Avissawella, following the Kelani river upstream as the road narrows and the forest closes in. It is one of the shortest routes to anywhere that feels genuinely remote.

Kitulgala is the adventure stop on most itineraries: grade two and three rapids on the Kelani, canyoning in the tributary gorges, and rainforest walks in the wet zone forest that surrounds the village. It is also where David Lean filmed The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957 — the bridge was blown up for the film and the remains are still in the river.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Kitulgala — FAQ

Is the rafting at Kitulgala suitable for beginners?

Yes. The standard run is grade two to three — splashy rather than frightening — and operators provide helmets, buoyancy aids and a guide in each raft. Children over about 10 usually manage it fine. Water levels are highest and the run fastest from May to December.

How far is Kitulgala from Kandy?

About two and a half hours over the hills, and around the same to Nuwara Eliya. It sits neatly between Colombo and the hill country, which is why many routes stop here for a morning of rafting on the way up.

Is one night enough in Kitulgala?

One night covers a rafting session and a rainforest walk. Two if you want to add canyoning or birdwatching — the wet-zone forest here holds a good number of endemic species.
