Airport to Gampola: what to expect

Gampola was the seat of the Sinhalese kingdom for about half a century in the 14th century, before the court moved on to Kotte and eventually Kandy. What survives is modest — a couple of temples and a bridge over the Mahaweli — but the town sits in a bend of the river with hills on every side, and it is the gateway to something more dramatic.

Ambuluwawa is the reason most visitors come. A white spiral tower on a hilltop above the town, climbed by an external staircase that narrows as it rises, with a Buddhist stupa, a kovil, a mosque and a church sharing the same summit. It has become one of the most photographed places in the country. Kandy is an hour north, so most guests reach Gampola from there rather than direct from the airport.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Gampola — FAQ

How far is Gampola from Kandy?

About an hour by road, or thirty minutes by train on the hill-country line. Most visitors base themselves in Kandy and come to Gampola for Ambuluwawa rather than staying here.

Is Gampola worth visiting?

For Ambuluwawa tower, yes — the climb and the view are genuinely striking. The town itself is a working provincial centre with a royal history but little visible of it. Treat it as the base of the tower rather than a destination.

Can you stop on the way from the airport?

Yes. Kadugannawa and Peradeniya both sit on the route and add an hour or two between them. Tell us when you send your flight details and we will build the time in.
