Airport to Hatton: what to expect
Three and a half to four hours from the terminal, climbing steeply after Avissawella. Hatton sits at around 1,200 metres in the middle of some of the highest-grown tea in Sri Lanka, surrounded by estates that have been working since the 1860s.
The town itself is functional rather than pretty — a busy junction with a railway station and a market. What surrounds it is the draw: the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs, restored planters' bungalows now taken over by tea-estate hotels, and the road up to Nallathanniya for the Adam's Peak climb, about an hour away.
Hatton station is also on the main hill-country line, which means you can arrive here by train from Kandy and pick up a vehicle without backtracking.

Is Hatton a good base for Adam's Peak?
It is the practical one. Nallathanniya, the village at the foot of the mountain, is about an hour away and has limited accommodation. Many guests sleep at a tea bungalow near Hatton, drive up around 1am and climb from there.
What is there to do around Hatton?
Tea factory tours, the Castlereagh and Maussakelle reservoirs, walks through the estates, and Adam's Peak in season. The Bogawantalawa valley south of the town is among the most scenic tea country in Sri Lanka.
Can I get to Hatton by train?
