Colombo Airport to Nilaveli Taxi

White sand, Pigeon Island's reef offshore, and the calmest sea in Sri Lanka between May and September.

The route

Airport to Nilaveli: what to expect

Five and a half to six hours north-east, through Dambulla and Habarana and then out to the coast past Trincomalee. The Cultural Triangle sits directly on this route, which makes a stop at Sigiriya or Dambulla the natural way to break it up.

Nilaveli is a long, wide beach twenty minutes north of Trincomalee, quieter than Uppuveli and with the reefs of Pigeon Island National Park a short boat ride offshore. The snorkelling there is the best easily reached on the island: shallow coral, reef fish in quantity, and blacktip reef sharks in the shallows that are entirely harmless and still startling the first time.

Good to know

Colombo Airport to Nilaveli — FAQ

Is Pigeon Island worth it?

For snorkelling, yes — it is the most accessible good reef in Sri Lanka, ten minutes offshore by boat, with shallow coral and blacktip reef sharks in the shallows. Go early before the boats arrive, and take your own mask if you are fussy about fit.

When is the season at Nilaveli?

May to September, when the east coast is dry and the sea is glassy. Between November and February the north-east monsoon brings rain and rough water, and many places close.

Is Nilaveli or Uppuveli better?

Nilaveli is longer, quieter and closer to Pigeon Island. Uppuveli is nearer Trincomalee town with more restaurants within walking distance. They are fifteen minutes apart, so it comes down to whether you want quiet or convenience.
