The route

Airport to Vavuniya: what to expect

Five hours from the terminal, straight up the A9 past Anuradhapura. Vavuniya is the southern gateway to the north — for decades the checkpoint town where the government-controlled south met the conflict zone, and now simply a busy junction.

Most guests pass through on the way to Jaffna, another two hours north. There are tanks and a modest archaeological museum, but the town's significance is as a staging point rather than a destination.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. We accept LKR, USD, EUR and GBP, and confirm payment terms with your quote. Our team has handled mishandled-baggage delivery for Emirates passengers at this airport since the 1990s, which is how we know the terminal and the roads as well as we do.

Colombo Airport to Vavuniya — FAQ

Where is Vavuniya?

On the A9 in the northern dry zone, about five hours from the airport and two hours south of Jaffna. It is the main town of the Vanni region.

Is it worth stopping?

As a break on the long drive to Jaffna, yes. There is a small museum and some tanks, but most travellers use it for fuel and food rather than sightseeing.

Should I break the Jaffna drive here?

Anuradhapura, an hour and a half south, is the better overnight stop — more to see and better accommodation. Vavuniya works as a lunch break.
