The route

Airport to Batticaloa: what to expect

Six to six and a half hours east, either through Habarana and Polonnaruwa or via Kandy and Mahiyanganaya. It is one of the longest transfers we run, and we normally suggest breaking it with a night in the Cultural Triangle rather than doing it in one sitting.

Batticaloa sits on a lagoon system rather than the open sea, with a compact Portuguese-Dutch fort at its centre and a bridge across the water that is famous locally for its 'singing fish' — a humming heard from the lagoon on still nights, most often around the full moon. The east coast's season runs opposite to the west, so this is where to be between May and September.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Batticaloa — FAQ

When is the best time to visit Batticaloa?

May to September, when the west and south coasts are under the south-west monsoon and the east is dry and calm. The east coast season runs almost exactly opposite to the rest of the island, which is what makes it useful for summer trips.

Should I break the drive from the airport?

We would recommend it. Six and a half hours after a long-haul flight is a great deal, and Polonnaruwa or Habarana sit conveniently on the northern route. Many guests spend a night in the Cultural Triangle and arrive on the east coast fresh.

What are the singing fish of Batticaloa?

A humming sound heard from the lagoon on still nights, particularly near the full moon, traditionally attributed to fish. Locals will take you out by boat near the Kallady bridge to listen for it. Whether you hear anything is another matter.
