The place

What Uppuveli actually is

Uppuveli is a beach strip on the coast north of Trincomalee, about 5 to 6 km from the town centre and roughly 10 km south of Nilaveli. It faces the open sea, with warm water, a gently sloping bottom and a long stretch of sand lined with palms. There are no high-rises, only guesthouses, a few bars with sun loungers, snorkelling shops and small dive centres.

It suits people who want a slow few days and a choice of places to eat within walking distance. It is the easier base if you want restaurants, while Nilaveli is quieter and closer to Pigeon Island.

It is not the prettiest beach in the country and rubbish can be a problem on parts of it. The season matters more than anything else: seas are calmest from roughly April to September, and the north-east monsoon from about October to January brings rain, rough water and shut-down dive operations.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The long sand

A wide, gently curving beach with palms behind it. Walk away from the busiest stretch to find space.

Beach bars and restaurants

A mix of small seafood places and beach bars within walking distance. Menus and quality vary, so check what is busy.

Dive and snorkel shops

Small operators work from the beach. Diving is weather-dependent and not on a Maldives level, so ask about conditions before booking.

Nilaveli and Pigeon Island

Nilaveli is about 10 km north, and Pigeon Island boat trips usually leave from there.
