Airport to Uppuveli: what to expect
Five to five and a half hours from the terminal, through Dambulla and Habarana. Uppuveli is six kilometres north of Trincomalee, and it is the more convenient of the two beaches there — smaller than Nilaveli, but with places to eat within walking distance of where you sleep.
The beach is a long shallow curve, and between May and September the sea here is about as calm and clear as Sri Lanka gets. Pigeon Island is twenty minutes up the coast at Nilaveli and reached by boat from there; whale and dolphin trips run out of Trincomalee harbour.
There is a Commonwealth war cemetery just inland, immaculately kept, holding graves from the Japanese raid on Trincomalee in 1942.
