Colombo Airport to Horton Plains Taxi
A high plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest, and an escarpment that drops 870 metres straight down — if you get there before the cloud does.
Airport to Horton Plains: what to expect
Five hours from the terminal, climbing to just over 2,100 metres. Horton Plains is a national park unlike anywhere else in Sri Lanka: open grassland, patches of stunted cloud forest, sambar deer and a wind that makes it feel considerably colder than the thermometer says.
The circuit walk is around nine kilometres and takes three hours. It goes out to Little World's End, on to World's End proper — a sheer drop of about 870 metres with the southern plains laid out below — and returns via Baker's Falls.
The timing is not negotiable. The view at World's End is usually clear until about half past nine in the morning, after which cloud rises out of the valley and there is nothing to see at all. That means leaving Nuwara Eliya by 5:30am, or the airport the day before.

Colombo Airport to Horton Plains — FAQ
What time should I arrive at Horton Plains?
At the gate for opening, around 6am. World's End is normally clear until about 9:30am and then closes in with cloud for the rest of the day. Arriving at ten means a three-hour walk to look at a wall of white.
How hard is the Horton Plains walk?
The loop is about 9 km on mostly level ground and takes roughly three hours. It is not difficult, but it is at 2,100 metres and genuinely cold at dawn — bring a warm layer, and expect wind on the open grassland.
Can I visit Horton Plains as a day trip from the airport?
Not sensibly. It is five hours away and you need to be at the gate at 6am. Almost everyone stays at Nuwara Eliya or Ohiya the night before and drives up in the dark.
