Colombo Airport to Haputale Taxi
A tea town on a knife-edge ridge, with a view that drops 1,500 metres to the southern plains when the cloud lifts.
Airport to Haputale: what to expect
Five hours into the hills, climbing steadily after Ratnapura through tea country and switchbacks. It is a long drive and the last hour is slow by necessity — these are mountain roads, and being unhurried on them is the whole point.
Haputale sits on a ridge so narrow that the town has views off both sides. Below it lies the Dambatenne tea estate, built by Thomas Lipton in the 1890s, and above it Lipton's Seat, the lookout where he is said to have surveyed his holdings. On a clear early morning you can see all the way to the south coast; by ten o'clock the cloud has usually closed in.

Colombo Airport to Haputale — FAQ
Is Haputale better than Ella?
Quieter, higher and far less touristed — Haputale has none of Ella's cafes and hostels. If you want tea country without the crowd, it is the better base. If you want the Nine Arch Bridge and a social scene, Ella is an hour away.
What is Lipton's Seat?
A viewpoint above the Dambatenne estate, reached by a seven-kilometre road through tea fields or on foot. Go for sunrise: the view over the southern plains is remarkable in the first hour of light and gone by mid-morning.
Can I take the train to Haputale?
Yes, and the Haputale to Ella section is among the most scenic on the hill-country line. On a private tour we drop you at the station with a day bag, carry the luggage by road and meet you at the other end.
