Colombo Airport to Bandarawela Taxi
The hill country's mildest climate, halfway between Nuwara Eliya and Ella, and a town that still functions as a town.
Airport to Bandarawela: what to expect
Five hours from the terminal, climbing through Ratnapura and the tea estates. The road is good but slow in the last stretch, as all roads are once you are above 1,000 metres here.
Bandarawela sits at around 1,200 metres — high enough to be cool, low enough to escape the damp chill of Nuwara Eliya. The British used it as a health station for exactly that reason. It is a working market town rather than a resort, with tea estates on every side, and it makes a practical base for the Ella and Haputale area without the tourist pricing of either.
Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Bandarawela — FAQ
Why stay in Bandarawela rather than Ella?
It is cheaper, quieter and more of a real town, with Ella half an hour away when you want it. The trade-off is that there is less to do in the evenings and fewer places aimed at visitors.
What is the climate like?
Mild and dry compared with the rest of the hill country — around 1,200 metres, so cool evenings but without the persistent damp of Nuwara Eliya at 1,900 metres. It was used as a convalescent station under the British for that reason.
Is five hours in the car too long after a flight?
For many people, yes. We usually suggest breaking the journey with a night on the coast or in Kandy rather than driving straight into the hills after a long-haul flight. Tell us your arrival time and we will say honestly whether it is worth it.
