Airport to Badulla: what to expect
Five and a half hours from the terminal. Badulla is the terminus of the famous hill-country line from Colombo and Kandy, which is how most travellers encounter it — as the place the train finally stops.
It is one of the oldest towns in Sri Lanka, ringed by mountains at around 680 metres, and it has a very different feel from Ella and Bandarawela up the hill: bigger, busier, and much less geared to visitors. The Muthiyangana Raja Maha Vihara in the centre is an ancient and important temple that almost no foreign visitor sets foot in.
Dunhinda Falls, six kilometres north, is the reason most people stop. A 64-metre drop reached by a rough half-hour walk, and the spray it throws gives it its name — the smoky waterfall.

As a working town with a significant temple and a waterfall nearby, it has its merits, but most travellers pass through rather than stay. Ella and Bandarawela are an hour up the hill and far better set up for visitors.
Is Badulla the end of the train line?
Yes — it is the terminus of the Main Line from Colombo Fort via Kandy, Nanu Oya and Ella. The Ella to Badulla section is short and pretty, though the celebrated scenery is mostly west of Ella.
How do I get to Dunhinda Falls?
Six kilometres north of Badulla by road, then a rough footpath of about half an hour each way. Wear proper shoes and go after rain if you can — in dry months the flow drops considerably.
