Kalkudah Beach
A long, plain public beach about 2 km south of Pasikudah’s resort bay, with more room and far fewer buildings, but also less shade and less shelter.
What Kalkudah actually is
Kalkudah is the public beach next door to Pasikudah. It lies roughly 2 km south of Pasikudah’s sheltered bay and about 34–35 km north of Batticaloa town, and the two are normally visited together. Pasikudah’s northern shore is divided between resorts; Kalkudah is a long, plain stretch of sand with palms behind it and much less built on it.
That is both the appeal and the limit. Shade is scarce and facilities are modest: a few simple eateries and food stalls, with the larger hotels over at Pasikudah and along Coconut Board Road. Guides disagree on the sea itself. One describes calm water sheltered by an offshore reef; another calls the beach rugged. Look at the water before you swim rather than assuming it matches Pasikudah’s famously shallow bay.
One local guide gives April to September as the dry, calm season on this coast, with October to January wetter. Go at the ends of the day, bring your own shade, and treat it as a quiet add-on to Pasikudah rather than a destination in its own right.
Worth your attention
Space
A long beach where you can walk until other people thin out. This is the main reason to come here rather than stay on the Pasikudah resort strip.
Palms at the back
Coconut palms line the top of the beach and are about the only shade. Sit under them, not at the water’s edge.
The contrast with Pasikudah
Walk or drive the 2 km north and compare. The resort bay is shallower and tidier; Kalkudah is plainer and emptier.
First light
The coast faces east, so the sea catches the sun first thing. An early start also beats the heat, which is the main problem here.
Before you go
Do this
- Pair it with Pasikudah; the two beaches are only about 2 km apart.
- Bring a hat, sunscreen and an umbrella. There is little natural shade.
- Carry cash and water. ATMs are scarce and stalls are basic.
- Ask a local or a lifeguard about the sea state before swimming; do not assume it is as sheltered as Pasikudah.
- Walk away from the access point to find a quiet patch.
Know this first
- Shade is scarce, so midday is hard going.
- Facilities are thin: expect simple food stalls, not resort-style services.
- Guides disagree on how calm the water is. Check on the day.
- From roughly October to January the north-east monsoon brings rain and rougher conditions.
