A hill station the British built to feel like Surrey, at 1,868 metres, surrounded by the tea that made Ceylon a household word. Cold, damp, faintly absurd and worth it.
Why Nuwara Eliya is worth your time
Nuwara Eliya is the strangest town in Sri Lanka. The British established it in the 1840s as a hill retreat and then set about making it look like home: a golf course, a racecourse, a post office in mock-Tudor half-timber, hedges, and hotels with fireplaces and billiard rooms. The result, at nearly 1,900 metres and surrounded by tea, is a fragment of Victorian England dropped into the tropics and never quite removed. Locals call it Little England without embarrassment.
The tea is the real substance. The estates around the town produce some of the highest-grown leaf in the world, and the factories — Pedro, Damro Labookellie, Blue Field — run tours through withering lofts, rolling machines and grading floors, ending with a cup that tastes noticeably different from what you brought from home.
The other reason to come is Horton Plains, an hour south: a high plateau of montane grassland and cloud forest with a nine-kilometre circuit walk to World's End, an escarpment that drops 870 metres more or less straight down. You need to be walking by 6:30am, because by mid-morning the cloud comes up and there is nothing to see at all.

Tea factories
Pedro Estate and Damro Labookellie both run short tours. Watching the grading floor changes how you think about the word 'quality' on a tea packet.
Gregory Lake
A boating lake in the middle of town, built by a British governor. Pleasantly, unashamedly kitsch — swan pedalos and horse rides on the shore.
Victoria Park
Formal gardens in the centre of town, and a genuinely good birding spot between March and May for hill-country endemics.
Lover's Leap and Single Tree Hill
Two short walks straight out of town, through tea, for views over the valley without needing a vehicle.
The Grand Hotel and the Hill Club
Colonial relics still functioning as hotels. Afternoon tea in a room with a fire lit in the tropics is a peculiar and enjoyable thing.

How to reach Nuwara Eliya
Four to four and a half hours from the terminal, climbing hard after Avissawella or via Kandy. The last hour is switchbacks through tea, and it cannot be hurried — nor should it be, since it is one of the best drives on the island.
Nanu Oya, seven kilometres from town, is the railway station for Nuwara Eliya and the start of the most scenic section of the hill-country line. On a private tour we drop you there, carry your luggage by road and meet you in Ella.

What time should I go to Horton Plains?
Leave Nuwara Eliya by 5:30am to be at the gate for opening. World's End is usually clear until around 9:30am, after which cloud fills the valley and the view disappears entirely. The full 9 km loop takes about three hours.
Is Nuwara Eliya worth visiting?
For tea country, Horton Plains and the sheer oddity of a Victorian hill station at 1,900 metres, yes. If you want warmth and beaches it will baffle you — it is cold, damp and does not pretend otherwise. Most itineraries give it one or two nights between Kandy and Ella.
How cold does Nuwara Eliya get?
Nights routinely fall to 8–12°C and occasionally lower in December and January, when frost is possible on the higher estates. Many hotels have no heating, so pack a warm layer even in a tropical country.
Is Nuwara Eliya or Ella better?
Nuwara Eliya for tea estates, Horton Plains and colonial atmosphere. Ella for hiking, the Nine Arch Bridge and a warmer, more social scene. They are two hours apart and most hill-country routes include both.
