The place

What Lovers Leap actually is

Lovers Leap Falls is a waterfall of about 30 metres (roughly 98 ft) a few kilometres from the centre of Nuwara Eliya, near the Pedro Tea Estate. It is fed by streams from the slopes of Pidurutalagala, the country's highest mountain. Distances from town vary by source, from about 2 to 5 km.

The name comes from a legend. A prince, lost while hunting, is rescued by a village girl; the families object and the couple jump from the top. A second version says the king opposed a marriage across caste lines. Whether any of it happened is unclear.

From the road you walk the last stretch: a gravel path of about 250 metres from where a tuk-tuk can drop you, or a steeper climb of roughly 400 metres on a narrow tarred road, with a shortcut through tea. The fall is gentle in dry spells and much stronger after rain.

What to look for

Worth your attention

The fall itself

About 30 m, in one or two drops. Strength depends heavily on recent rain.

The tea estate walk

The path passes through tea, with pickers visible in the working hours.

The viewpoint

The best view is from the track near the base; the top is not a safe place to stand.

The surrounding valley

On clear mornings you can see across the valley and tea slopes.

Straight advice

Before you go

Do this

  • Walk rather than ride the last stretch if you are fit; it is steep but short.
  • Wear shoes with grip; the path is slippery after rain.
  • Go in the morning for clearer views.
  • Take a rain layer.
  • Combine with a tea estate visit nearby.

Know this first

  • In dry weather the fall can be disappointingly thin.
  • The path becomes slippery in the rain.
  • The water is collected for drinking supply, so do not litter or swim.
  • Vendors and touts gather near the entrance.
