Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya
A 27-acre public park in the middle of town, formal lawns and flower beds, with a stream that draws migrant birds in the cooler months.
What Victoria Park actually is
Victoria Park is a public park of about 27 acres (11 hectares) in the middle of Nuwara Eliya, on Badulla Road. It was named in 1897 for Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and is laid out with lawns, flower beds and mature foreign trees. Time Out notes it was once a research field of the Haggala Botanical Garden.
The park is at its most colourful in March and April, which is also when it is busiest with local visitors. Birdwatchers come for the small stream in the shrubs: reports mention Pied Thrush, Kashmir Flycatcher and Indian Blue Robin, which spend the cooler months in the highlands.
It is an easy hour. If you are not interested in flowers or birds, it is a short stop rather than a destination.
Worth your attention

The park’s main draw in March and April; outside those months the display is thinner.
The stream and shrubs
Pied Thrush is the main target for birders, often early in the morning, usually near a small hidden stream.
The old trees
Large exotic trees give the park its English feel, including an oak planted in the late 1890s.
Indian Blue Robin and Kashmir Flycatcher
Rare local and migrant species listed by the Central Province tourism board; sightings are not guaranteed.
