The place

What the Grand Hotel actually is

The Grand Hotel stands on the site of the mountain house of Sir Edward Barnes, a British governor, known as Barnes Hall. One account says a planter, Reginald Downhall, bought it in 1843 and took in guests, and that in 1891 a hotel company rebuilt it in English Tudor style and named it the Grand Hotel. Another gives 1891 as the date the house itself was built, so the early history is not settled.

It is next to Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, founded in 1889, and has been sold as a heritage hotel for years. It is still a working hotel, with a restaurant, gardens and afternoon tea on the lawn.

Neighbouring is the Hill Club, a former gentlemen’s club which is also a hotel; its founding date varies by source, 1867 or 1876. Both give the town its “Little England” reputation more than any museum does.
