Ella Rock
Two to four hours return along a live railway line and up through eucalyptus — the proper Ella walk, and the one people most often get wrong.
What Ella Rock actually is
Ella Rock is the serious walk from Ella, and its reputation is built as much on people losing the path as on the view. The route leaves the town along the railway line, crosses a bridge, drops off the tracks at an unmarked point, climbs through tea and then eucalyptus forest to a bare summit facing the Ella Gap.
Nothing is signed. The turning off the railway is easy to miss, several false paths lead away from the correct one, and helpful-looking people along the way sometimes offer directions in exchange for money and send walkers the wrong way. This is the one Ella walk where a local guide earns their fee, and we can arrange one.
The reward is a summit considerably higher and emptier than Little Adam's Peak, looking across at it and down the Gap towards the plains. Allow three to four hours return at a comfortable pace, and start early enough that you are on top before the cloud.
Worth your attention
The railway section
The first kilometre or so follows the live line out of Ella, past a bridge and tea plots. Atmospheric, and you will meet trains.
Eucalyptus forest
The upper section climbs through planted eucalyptus, cool and quiet and completely different from the tea below.
The summit
A bare rounded top facing the Ella Gap, with Little Adam's Peak opposite and the plains beyond. Usually far quieter.
Kithal Ella falls
A small waterfall on one variant of the route, worth the short detour if your guide takes that way.
Before you go
Do this
- Take a local guide — the route is unsigned and commonly lost
- Start by 6:30am for the view and to avoid the heat
- Wear proper shoes and long socks; it is muddy and leechy after rain
- Carry two litres of water per person
- Tell someone your plan if you go without a guide
Know this first
- The first section is on a live railway — trains do come
- Strangers offering directions sometimes deliberately misdirect for a fee
- Leeches are abundant after rain
- There is no shade on the summit and no water anywhere on the route

Ella Rock — frequently asked
How long is the Ella Rock hike?
Three to four hours return for most people, covering roughly 8 km with around 500 metres of ascent. It is not technical, but the unsigned route is what makes it hard.
Do I need a guide for Ella Rock?
We would strongly recommend one. The turning off the railway is unmarked, several wrong paths look plausible, and people are misdirected regularly. A local guide costs around LKR 3,000 and removes the problem entirely.
Is Ella Rock harder than Little Adam's Peak?
Considerably. Little Adam's Peak is a signed 45-minute stepped path; Ella Rock is three to four hours on an unsigned route with real ascent. Most people with two days in Ella do both.
Is it safe to walk along the railway line?
Trains use the line and there is no separate path for the first section, so you walk on or beside the track. Stay alert, step well clear when you hear one, and never stop on a bridge.
