Ravana Falls
A wide cascade tumbling straight onto the Wellawaya road ten minutes from Ella — easy to reach, tied to the Ramayana, and busier than it deserves.
What Ravana Falls actually is
Ravana Falls drops about 25 metres in a broad fan directly beside the road down from Ella towards Wellawaya, which is both its appeal and its problem. You can stop the car and be standing at the base in a minute, so everybody does.
The name ties it to the Ramayana: by tradition King Ravana hid the abducted Sita in a cave behind these falls, and Ravana Cave up the hillside is presented as that place. The archaeology of the cave is genuinely interesting — it has yielded human remains dating back thousands of years — even if the connection to the epic is devotional rather than historical.
We will be straightforward: this is a roadside stop, not a destination. After rain it is a real waterfall and worth twenty minutes. In the dry months it thins to a trickle behind a row of stalls and a small crowd. If you have half a day and want a waterfall, Diyaluma an hour away is a completely different proposition.

A climb of several hundred steps up the hillside opposite, with prehistoric significance and a view back down the valley.

Sri Lanka's Ramayana trail passes through here, and the site draws Hindu pilgrims as well as tourists.
Ease of access
Genuinely the point. If mobility is an issue, this is the hill-country waterfall you can actually reach.

- Stop after rain, when it is actually flowing
- Go early — coaches arrive from mid-morning
- Fold it into the drive between Ella and Yala rather than a special trip
- Climb to Ravana Cave if you have the legs and an hour
- Keep your bag with you; the parking area is busy

- Rocks at the base are slippery and people are injured every year
- Vendors and monkeys at the parking area are persistent
- It is crowded, roadside and noisy — manage expectations

Is Ravana Falls worth visiting?
After rain, for twenty minutes, yes — it is impressive and requires no walking. In dry months it thins considerably and can disappoint. It works best as a stop on the drive between Ella and the south rather than a destination.
Can you swim at Ravana Falls?
There are pools at the base and people do swim, but the rocks are slippery, the flow rises quickly after upstream rain, and injuries are common. It is not a supervised swimming spot.
What is the Ravana Falls legend?
