Why Unawatuna is worth your time
Unawatuna's bay is a near-perfect crescent, protected by a reef at its mouth, which makes it one of the calmer swims on the south coast and a natural favourite with families and people who do not surf. It sits twenty minutes east of Galle Fort, close enough that many travellers base here and visit the fort rather than the other way round.
It has been popular for a long time and shows it. Erosion and heavy building have narrowed the beach considerably from what older guidebooks describe, and the strip behind it is dense with restaurants and guesthouses. It remains a lovely bay; it is not an undiscovered one.
The best of the area is around the edges. A path over the headland at the western end leads to the Japanese Peace Pagoda, a white stupa built by Nipponzan-Myōhōji monks with a view over the whole coast, and just below it Jungle Beach — a small cove reached through the trees, with decent snorkelling straight off the rocks.
The things worth stopping for
The bay
Reef-sheltered and shallow, which makes it among the safer swims on this coast. The eastern end is quieter than the strip in the middle.
Jungle Beach
A small cove on the far side of the western headland, reached on foot through scrub or by tuk-tuk. Snorkelling off the rocks and a fraction of the crowd.
Japanese Peace Pagoda
A white stupa on the headland above Jungle Beach, built by Japanese Buddhist monks. Free, quiet, and the best sunset viewpoint in the area.
Yatagala Raja Maha Vihara
An inland rock temple a few kilometres north, with a reclining Buddha and painted walls, and almost no visitors.
Galle Fort
Twenty minutes west, and easily done as a late-afternoon trip for the ramparts at sunset.
Snorkelling and diving
Reef and a couple of wrecks offshore. Visibility is best from December to March, and dive shops cluster at the eastern end of the bay.

Do this
- Walk over the headland to Jungle Beach and the Peace Pagoda for sunset
- Swim at the eastern end, away from the busiest stretch
- Base here and visit Galle Fort in the late afternoon
- Come between December and March for the clearest water
- Eat away from the beachfront — prices drop noticeably one street back

How to reach Unawatuna
Two to two and a half hours from the terminal, almost entirely on the Southern Expressway, then twenty minutes east from Galle on the coast road.
Its position is the strength: Galle twenty minutes west, Koggala and Ahangama twenty minutes east, Mirissa forty-five. A single base here reaches most of the south-west coast.

Is Unawatuna beach still nice?
The bay is genuinely lovely and among the calmest swims on the coast, but erosion and building have narrowed the sand considerably, and it is busy. If you want space, Talalla or Tangalle further east deliver it; if you want a sheltered swim near Galle, Unawatuna still works.
How do I get to Jungle Beach?
Walk over the western headland from Unawatuna, roughly twenty minutes on a rough path past the Peace Pagoda, or take a tuk-tuk round by road. It is free, considerably quieter than the main bay, and has snorkelling off the rocks.
Is Unawatuna good for swimming?
Better than most of the south coast, because the reef at the mouth of the bay takes the force out of the swell. It is one of the reasons families choose it. Conditions still change with the season and there are currents at the edges of the bay.
Is Unawatuna or Mirissa better?
Unawatuna for calm swimming and proximity to Galle Fort. Mirissa for whale watching, a livelier evening scene and a prettier headland. They are forty-five minutes apart, and plenty of people stay in one and visit the other.
