The place

What Jungle Beach actually is

Jungle Beach is a small cove on the western side of the Rumassala headland, about 3 km from Unawatuna by one guide’s measure. The bay is sheltered from the stronger waves and currents at Unawatuna, which is why people come.

The classic route is on foot past the Japanese Peace Pagoda and along a track through the trees. Stairs now run down from the pagoda area, which makes access easier than it used to be. Tuk-tuks can take you most of the way over a steep, narrow road.

The first bay has sunbeds and a small café; further along there is a quieter, almost empty stretch. It is calmer and less crowded than Unawatuna, though it can fill up at busy times. Snorkelling is reported to be good here by Unawatuna standards.

Before you go

Do this

  • Go in the morning for the best light and fewer people.
  • Swim only in the sheltered part and check conditions.

Know this first

  • It is not a secret: the main bay gets busy on dry-season afternoons.
