Bentota
A long spit of sand with the Indian Ocean on one side and a river on the other, ninety minutes from the airport. The south coast's easiest introduction.
Why Bentota is worth your time
Bentota was Sri Lanka's first purpose-built resort area, developed in the 1960s on a natural spit where the Bentota Ganga runs parallel to the sea before joining it. That geography is what makes it work: calm river water on one side for water sports, open ocean on the other for swimming and surf, and a long strip of sand in between.
It is the most developed part of the south-west coast, and that cuts both ways. There is a wide range of hotels, everything is easy, and it is only ninety minutes from the airport on the expressway. It also feels more like a resort strip and less like a Sri Lankan town than Mirissa or Tangalle do.
The two things here that genuinely stand out are inland. The Madu River, fifteen minutes south, is a broad estuary with sixty-odd mangrove islands, monitor lizards and kingfishers, and boat safaris that thread through mangrove tunnels barely wider than the hull. And Lunuganga, the country estate of the architect Geoffrey Bawa, is one of the great tropical gardens — fifty years of one man reshaping a hillside, and open to visitors.
The things worth stopping for
Madu River safari
Two hours through a mangrove estuary of sixty islands, including a cinnamon island where bark is still peeled by hand and tunnels of mangrove you duck through. Go early, before the wind.
Lunuganga
Geoffrey Bawa's garden estate at Bentota, worked on for five decades. Terraces, borrowed views and deliberate framing — among the finest tropical gardens anywhere.
The beach spit
Wide, long and swimmable in season, with the river on the landward side. The northern end near the river mouth is the quietest.
Water sports
Jet skis, banana boats, windsurfing and wakeboarding on the river, which stays flat when the sea does not. The main cluster is around the river mouth.
Turtle hatcheries
Several along the Kosgoda road south. Standards vary considerably — the better ones release hatchlings promptly rather than keeping them in tanks for photographs.

- Take the Madu River safari early morning rather than midday
- Book Lunuganga in advance — entry is by timed visit
- Stay near the river mouth for the quietest stretch of sand
- Use it as a first or last coastal stop — it is the closest good beach to the airport
- Ask which turtle hatchery actually releases hatchlings quickly

How to reach Bentota
Ninety minutes from the terminal on the Southern Expressway, bypassing Colombo entirely. It is the closest genuinely good beach to the airport, which makes it a strong option for a first or last night if Negombo does not appeal.
From Bentota the coast road and expressway both run south — Hikkaduwa is 40 minutes, Galle an hour, and Mirissa around ninety minutes.

Is Bentota good for families?
Yes — it is the easiest coastal destination on the island for families. The river gives calm water for children and water sports, the hotels are geared for it, and it is only ninety minutes from the airport, which matters with young children after a long flight.
What is the Madu River safari like?
A two-hour boat trip through a mangrove estuary with around sixty islands, including narrow mangrove tunnels and a cinnamon island where the bark is peeled by hand. Kingfishers, monitor lizards and water birds throughout. Go early morning.
Is Bentota or Hikkaduwa better?
Bentota for families, calm water and resorts; Hikkaduwa for surf, snorkelling with turtles and a younger, cheaper scene. They are forty minutes apart on the same coast.
When should I visit Bentota?
November to April, when the south-west coast is dry and the sea is calm. May to September brings the monsoon, rough water and frequent rain, and the east coast becomes the better option.
