A wide sandy bay with the gentlest surf on the island — where most people in Sri Lanka stand up on a board for the first time.
Why Weligama is worth your time
Weligama means 'sandy village', and the bay does the rest. It is wide, shallow, sandy-bottomed and produces long, slow, forgiving waves — which makes it the most reliable place in Sri Lanka to learn to surf. On any given morning there will be fifty people in the water, most of them standing up for the first time, and boards and instructors available every few metres along the sand.
That reputation has changed the town. What was a fishing village a decade ago now has a dense cluster of surf schools, hostels and cafes, and in high season the line-up is genuinely crowded. Experienced surfers usually move ten minutes west to Ahangama's reef breaks and treat Weligama as somewhere to eat.
Just offshore sits Taprobane Island — a rock with a single house on it, built in the 1920s by a self-styled French count and later owned by the writer Paul Bowles. You can wade out at low tide. Beyond the bay, the stilt fishermen you have seen in photographs work this stretch of coast, though what you will meet today is mostly a paid photo arrangement rather than a working method.
The things worth stopping for
The learn-to-surf bay
Sandy bottom, slow rollers, short paddle out. Boards, lessons and instructors are available all along the beach, and prices are low by any standard.
Taprobane Island
A tiny rock island with one villa on it, wadeable at low tide, once owned by Paul Bowles. Photogenic from the shore even if you never set foot on it.
Snake Island
A rocky outcrop at the eastern end of the bay, reachable on foot at low tide, with tidal pools and a quiet corner away from the surf schools.
Stilt fishermen
Along the coast towards Koggala. Be clear that this is now largely staged for cameras and agree a price first — it is still a striking image.
The fish market
At the western end near the harbour, busiest early. Real, working and entirely unconcerned with visitors.
Mirissa
Ten minutes east, for whale watching in season, Coconut Tree Hill and a livelier evening.

- Stay in Weligama and eat in Mirissa, or the reverse; they are ten minutes apart

- Book lessons through your hotel rather than off the beach
Know this first
- The bay gets genuinely crowded in high season, with collisions common
- Experienced surfers will find it too soft — Ahangama is the alternative
- The town itself is a working town, not a pretty one
- May to September brings monsoon swell and rougher conditions
How to reach Weligama
Two and a half hours from the terminal, nearly all of it on the Southern Expressway, then a short run along the coast road. Fast and straightforward.
Mirissa is ten minutes east, Ahangama fifteen west, and Galle around forty minutes. This is the most tightly packed stretch of coast on the island, and moving between towns takes minutes rather than hours.

Is Weligama the best place to learn to surf in Sri Lanka?
For most beginners, yes. The bay has a sandy bottom, a short paddle out and slow, forgiving waves, and there are more instructors per metre of sand than anywhere else on the island. The trade-off is that it can be very crowded in season.
Is Weligama or Mirissa better to stay in?
Weligama for surfing and lower prices; Mirissa for whale watching, a prettier bay and more evening options. They are ten minutes apart, so many people stay in one and eat in the other. Weligama is the better base if surfing is the reason you came.
Are the stilt fishermen real?
It was once a genuine fishing technique on this coast, but what you see on the poles today is largely arranged for photographs and payment is expected. Agree the fee before you take pictures. It is worth seeing as long as you understand what it is.
When is the surf season at Weligama?
November to April, when the south-west monsoon has passed and the swell is cleanest. The bay works in a wider range of conditions than most breaks because of its shape, but those months are the reliable window.
