Why Ahangama is worth your time
Ahangama runs for several kilometres along the coast road between Koggala and Midigama, and it has become the place people move to when Weligama gets too crowded and Midigama too basic. There are half a dozen reef breaks along this stretch, villas set back among the palms rather than a hotel strip, and a density of good cafes that would not embarrass a European beach town.
The surf is mostly reef, which sets the tone. It suits people who can already catch and turn, and the crowd reflects that — longer stays, early mornings, boards on tuk-tuk roofs. Beginners generally learn at Weligama, fifteen minutes east, and come back here to sleep.
Galle Fort is twenty minutes west, Koggala lake ten minutes east, and the stilt fishermen work the rocks in between. It is one of the better-positioned bases on the whole south coast.
The things worth stopping for
The reef breaks
Kabalana at the western end is the best-known, with a sandy-bottomed beach break alongside a sharper reef. Several more run east towards Midigama.

The main swimming beach, wide and sandy, with a gentler section at the eastern end when the swell is not too big.
The cafes
An unusual concentration of good coffee, bakeries and brunch places along the coast road. Not why you came, but genuinely welcome.
Koggala Lake
Ten minutes east — eight islands, a cinnamon plantation and excellent birdlife on an early-morning boat trip.
Galle Fort
Twenty minutes west, and the standard afternoon out from Ahangama.
Stilt fishermen
Along the rocks towards Koggala. Now largely a paid photo arrangement rather than working fishing — agree a price before the camera comes out.

Do this
- Surf at dawn before the onshore wind gets up
- Learn at Weligama and stay in Ahangama if you are a beginner
- Rent a scooter or tuk-tuk — the town is strung out along the road
- Do Galle Fort in the late afternoon for the ramparts at sunset
- Three nights minimum; this is a settle-in coast

How to reach Ahangama
Two and a quarter hours from the terminal, nearly all on the Southern Expressway before dropping onto the coast road near Galle. It is the quickest route to a surf coast anywhere on the island.
The whole south-west coast is close together from here — Galle twenty minutes, Weligama fifteen, Mirissa twenty-five, Unawatuna twenty-five. A single base covers all of it.

Ahangama — frequently asked
Is Ahangama good for beginner surfers?
Less so than Weligama, fifteen minutes east, which has a sandy bottom and slow rollers. Most Ahangama breaks are reef and suit surfers who can already catch and turn. Kabalana has a sandy section that works for improvers.
Is Ahangama or Weligama better?
Ahangama for reef surf, villas and food; Weligama for learning and lower prices. They are fifteen minutes apart and many people stay in one and surf in the other.
What is there to do besides surf?
Galle Fort twenty minutes west, Koggala lake and its islands ten minutes east, the Handunugoda tea estate inland, and Mirissa's whale watching twenty-five minutes on. The cafes alone fill a morning.
When is the surf season in Ahangama?
November to April, when the south-west monsoon has passed and the swell is cleanest. Mornings are consistently better than afternoons, before the onshore wind arrives.
