Airport to Ahangama: what to expect
The Southern Expressway does most of this drive, dropping you onto the coast road near Galle for the last twenty minutes. It is the fastest long transfer on the island and one of the few where the time estimate is honest rather than optimistic.

Is Ahangama good for beginner surfers?
Less so than Weligama, which is ten minutes east and has a sandy bottom and slow rollers. Ahangama's breaks are mostly reef and better suited to surfers who can already catch and turn. Many people stay in Ahangama and learn at Weligama.
How long does the drive from the airport take?
Around two and a quarter hours for 155 km, almost all of it on the Southern Expressway. It is comfortably the quickest way to reach the south coast, and far faster than the old coastal road through Hikkaduwa.
Can the transfer stop at Galle Fort?
Yes, and it is a natural break — the fort is 20 minutes short of Ahangama. An hour on the ramparts turns the transfer into part of the trip. Just say so when you send your flight number.
