Colombo Airport to Talaimannar Taxi
The far tip of Mannar island, looking across the shoals of Adam's Bridge towards India thirty kilometres away.
Airport to Talaimannar: what to expect
Talaimannar sits at the western end of Mannar island, reached by a causeway and then a long flat road through palmyra and salt pan. It was once the ferry terminal for the crossing to Rameswaram in India, and the old pier still runs out into the shallows, broken and unused since the service stopped in 1984.
Beyond it lies Adam's Bridge — a chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks running roughly thirty kilometres towards the Indian coast, largely submerged and named in both the Ramayana and Islamic tradition. On a clear day you can see the first islands from the shore. The birdlife across Mannar is exceptional between November and March, when migrant waders and flamingos arrive in numbers.
Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Colombo Airport to Talaimannar — FAQ
What is Adam's Bridge?
A chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks running about thirty kilometres from Talaimannar towards India, mostly submerged. It appears in the Ramayana as Rama's bridge and in Islamic tradition as Adam's, and the nearest islands are visible from shore.
Can you still take the ferry to India?
No. The service to Rameswaram stopped in 1984 during the civil war and has not resumed. The old pier at Talaimannar still stands but is derelict.
Is the long drive worth it?
For birdwatchers between November and March, genuinely — Mannar is among the best wader and flamingo sites in South Asia. For everyone else it is six and a half hours to a very flat, very quiet landscape. We would suggest breaking the journey at Anuradhapura.
