Colombo Airport to Mannar Taxi
A dry, flat island of baobabs, salt pans and donkeys, joined to the mainland by a causeway and pointing at India across Adam's Bridge.
Airport to Mannar: what to expect
Five and a half to six hours north of the terminal, through Puttalam and Vavuniya. Mannar is an island connected by a causeway, and it feels less like Sri Lanka than anywhere else in the country — flat, arid, scattered with palmyra and baobab trees brought by Arab traders centuries ago.
The Dutch fort at the causeway end is crumbling and open. Feral donkeys wander the roads. Salt pans stretch along the coast, and the birdlife on the lagoons is exceptional — Vankalai sanctuary is a Ramsar site and Mannar is one of the best places in South Asia for migrant waders and flamingos between November and March.
At the far end of the island, Talaimannar looks across the shoals of Adam's Bridge towards India, thirty kilometres away.

Colombo Airport to Mannar — FAQ
Is Mannar worth the drive?
For birdwatchers, absolutely — between November and March it is one of the best wader and flamingo sites in South Asia. For everyone else it is a long way for a landscape that is genuinely unlike the rest of Sri Lanka. Be honest with yourself about which you are.
What is Adam's Bridge?
A chain of limestone shoals and sandbanks running from Talaimannar towards India, roughly thirty kilometres of it, largely submerged. It appears in both the Ramayana and Islamic tradition, and you can see the first islands from the tip of Mannar.
When should I visit Mannar?
November to March for the migratory birds, which is the main reason most visitors come. The island is dry and hot year-round; the north-east monsoon brings some rain between October and December.
