Kitulgala
A river town in the rainforest foothills — white-water rafting, canyoning, forest walks and a film location, only two and a half hours from the airport.
Why Kitulgala is worth your time
Kitulgala is a small town on the Kelani River, in the wet-zone rainforest foothills between Colombo and the hill country. It has become the island's adventure centre, best known for white-water rafting.
The rafting runs on the Kelani with rapids of varying grades, supervised by local operators. Around it you can add canyoning, forest walks, birdwatching and visits to caves and waterfalls, all within a short distance of the town.
The town also has a place in film history: the classic film The Bridge on the River Kwai was shot here in the 1950s. It is close enough to the airport to be a first-day stop, which makes it an easy, active start or finish to a trip.
The things worth stopping for
White-water rafting
The Kelani River offers sections of rapids suitable for beginners and for experienced groups. Trips are run by local operators with safety gear and guides, and depend on river levels.
Canyoning and waterfall abseiling
Several operators offer canyoning in the surrounding forest, with abseils beside waterfalls for confident travellers.
Belilena cave
A large limestone cave of archaeological interest, reached by a short walk from the road. Check access conditions before you go.
Rainforest birdwatching
The nearby forest reserves are good for endemic birds, best seen early with a local guide.
The Bridge on the River Kwai location
The film's river location is near the town. Little remains, but the setting is atmospheric.
Kelani riverside stays
Simple riverside lodges and guesthouses give a quiet, green setting after an active day.
