The route

Airport to Wellawaya: what to expect

Four and a half hours from the terminal. Wellawaya sits at the junction where the road down from Ella meets the routes east to Monaragala and south to Tissamaharama, in dry, hot country at the foot of the escarpment.

The reason to stop is Buduruwagala, six kilometres south: seven enormous figures carved in relief into a rock face in the 9th or 10th century, the central Buddha standing about 16 metres. They are Mahayana rather than Theravada, unusual in Sri Lanka, and traces of the original stucco and paint survive on them.

Diyaluma Falls, twenty minutes up the road towards Koslanda, is the other draw — 220 metres, the second-highest in the country, with a series of natural pools at the top reached by a steep hour's climb.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Good to know

Colombo Airport to Wellawaya — FAQ

What is Buduruwagala?

A group of seven figures carved in relief into a rock face, dating to around the 9th or 10th century, with the central standing Buddha about 16 metres tall. It is Mahayana in character, which is unusual for Sri Lanka, and traces of original pigment remain.

How do I get to the pools at Diyaluma Falls?

There is a viewing point at the base by the road, and a separate steep path from the Poonagala road above that reaches the upper pools in about an hour. The climb is unsigned and slippery — go with someone who knows it.

Is Wellawaya worth staying in?

Usually not as a destination in itself. It is a useful stop between Ella and Yala, and the two sights nearby are genuinely good. Most guests visit them in passing rather than sleeping here.
