Colombo Airport to Sinharaja Taxi
The last significant stretch of primary lowland rainforest in Sri Lanka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and home to almost every endemic bird on the island.
Airport to Sinharaja: what to expect
Four hours from the terminal, inland through Ratnapura or via Deniyaya depending on which entrance you use. Sinharaja is what the wet zone looked like before the tea estates: 88 square kilometres of primary lowland rainforest, protected since 1978 and listed by UNESCO in 1988.
More than half the trees here are endemic, as are almost all of Sri Lanka's endemic birds. The famous phenomenon is the mixed-species feeding flock — dozens of birds of a dozen species moving through the canopy together, one of the most studied bird flocks in the world. Purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels and, if you are extraordinarily lucky, a leopard.
This is walking, not driving. You go in on foot with a guide, and the value of that guide is enormous — the birds are heard far more often than seen. It rains most afternoons, which is what makes it a rainforest.

Colombo Airport to Sinharaja — FAQ
Do I need a guide for Sinharaja?
Yes — entry is only with a registered guide, and you would want one regardless. The endemic birds are heard more than seen, and the difference between a good guide and no guide is the difference between a walk in the woods and a remarkable morning.
What can I see at Sinharaja?
Around twenty of Sri Lanka's endemic bird species, purple-faced langurs, giant squirrels, endemic lizards and amphibians, and mixed-species feeding flocks. Leopards are present but almost never seen. Go for the birds and the forest itself.
When is the best time to visit Sinharaja?
January to early April and August to September are the drier windows. It rains here year-round — that is the point of a rainforest — so bring waterproofs and leech socks whatever the month.
