Airport to Udawalawe: what to expect
Four hours from arrivals, expressway south and then inland through Embilipitiya. The final approach runs along the enormous Udawalawe reservoir, which is what makes the park what it is: permanent water in dry country, and therefore permanent elephants.
Udawalawe is the park to choose if elephants matter more than leopards. Around 500 live inside it and sightings are close to certain on any drive, in open grassland rather than thick scrub, and the crowding that spoils Yala in high season is far less of an issue here. Is Udawalawe better than Yala?
For elephants, clearly yes — sightings are near-certain, the terrain is open and there are far fewer jeeps. For leopards, no; Yala has the density. Guests with time do both, and guests with one day and children usually prefer Udawalawe.
What is the Elephant Transit Home?
A facility on the park boundary that raises orphaned calves and releases them back into the wild, rather than keeping them for rides or photographs. Visitors watch the milk feeds from a viewing platform. It is a genuinely different proposition from the better-known Pinnawala.
How long is the drive from the airport?
Around four hours for 215 km — expressway for the first two thirds, then inland roads. It is often combined with the south coast, since Tangalle and Mirissa are both about two hours away.
