Airport to Deniyaya: what to expect
Deniyaya is a small tea town on the southern edge of Sinharaja, and for anyone coming from the south coast it is much the more convenient of the two entrances — Kudawa, the main gate, is on the far north-west side and adds hours to the drive.
The forest here is primary lowland rainforest, protected since 1978 and UNESCO-listed since 1988, holding most of Sri Lanka's endemic birds and more than half its endemic trees. You enter on foot with a registered guide, and the value of a good one is enormous: the birds are heard far more often than seen. It rains most afternoons, which is what makes it a rainforest.

Is Deniyaya a better base for Sinharaja than Kudawa?
If you are coming from the south coast, considerably — Kudawa is on the opposite side of the forest and hours further by road. Kudawa has more guides and better facilities; Deniyaya is quieter and far easier to reach from Galle or Mirissa.
Do I need a guide for Sinharaja?
Yes. Entry is only permitted with a registered guide, arranged at the entrance. You would want one anyway — the endemic birds are heard more than seen and a good guide transforms the walk.
When is the best time to visit?
January to early April and August to September are the drier windows, and mornings always beat afternoons. Bring waterproofs and leech socks whatever the month.
