Colombo Airport to Polonnaruwa Taxi
Sri Lanka's second ancient capital, and the best-preserved one. Four and a half hours north-east of the terminal, through the dry zone.
Airport to Polonnaruwa: what to expect
The road runs north through Kurunegala's coconut belt, then east into flat dry-zone country dotted with the enormous man-made tanks that made this kingdom possible. The last hour is quiet, straight and green — paddy, egrets, and the occasional elephant warning sign that is not decorative.
Most guests break this journey rather than doing it in one push. Dambulla is roughly two thirds of the way and its cave temples take an hour; Sigiriya is a short detour north. If you land in the morning we will build one of those in at no extra charge, and you arrive in Polonnaruwa having already seen something.

Your driver meets you inside the arrivals hall with a name board, helps with luggage and SIM cards, and the price agreed on WhatsApp is final — fuel, tolls and parking are all inside it. Pay the driver on arrival in LKR, USD, EUR or GBP.

Worth a stop on the way
Dambulla Cave Temples
Five painted caves cut into a rock overhang, 65 km before Polonnaruwa. An hour well spent if you have daylight.
Habarana and the tanks
Village reservoirs a thousand years old, alive with buffalo and waterbirds at dusk.
Colombo Airport to Polonnaruwa — FAQ
Is Polonnaruwa worth the drive from the airport?
If ancient cities interest you, yes — Polonnaruwa is more intact and easier to walk than Anuradhapura, and the Gal Vihara Buddhas are among the finest stone carvings in Asia. But five hours is a long first day, so we usually route guests via a night in Sigiriya or Habarana instead.
Can I stop at Sigiriya on the way to Polonnaruwa?
Yes, and it is the sensible way to do it. Sigiriya is a 15 km detour from the main road and the two sit an hour apart, so many guests climb the rock in the morning and reach Polonnaruwa in the afternoon. Tell us on WhatsApp and we will allow the time.
What if my flight lands late at night?
We track your flight number, so a delay changes nothing and costs nothing. But we would not send you on a five-hour night drive if it can be avoided — a night in Negombo, fifteen minutes from the terminal, then a fresh start is usually the better trip.
