Colombo Airport to Pinnawala Taxi
The elephant orphanage on the Maha Oya, two and a half hours from arrivals and a common first stop en route to Kandy.
Airport to Pinnawala: what to expect
Two and a half hours east through Kegalle, on the main Colombo–Kandy road. It is a straightforward drive and Pinnawala sits almost exactly halfway to Kandy, which is why so many itineraries stop here on the first or second day.
The orphanage was founded in 1975 for orphaned and injured elephants, and the herd is now large and mostly captive-bred. The bathing sessions in the Maha Oya river, when the elephants are walked down through the village to the water, are the reason most people come. We will be straightforward with you: this is a popular stop and a genuinely impressive sight, but it is a captive facility, and if your interest is in seeing elephants wild then Udawalawe or Minneriya will serve you far better.

Colombo Airport to Pinnawala — FAQ
What time are the elephants bathed at Pinnawala?
The river bathing sessions are usually mid-morning and early afternoon, roughly 10am and 2pm, and last about two hours. Times shift, so we confirm on the day rather than promising a slot.
Is Pinnawala ethical?
It is a captive breeding and care facility rather than a sanctuary in the strict sense, and the elephants are handled and chained at times. Some visitors are comfortable with that and some are not. If you would rather see elephants in the wild, Udawalawe and Minneriya are the honest alternatives and we will happily route you there instead.
Can we stop at Pinnawala on the way to Kandy?
Yes — it is directly on the route and adds around two hours including the bathing session. This is the most common way guests visit it, rather than as a destination in its own right.
