Yapahuwa was the capital for barely a decade in the 1270s, when King Bhuvanekabahu I moved the court and the Tooth Relic to a granite rock rising ninety metres out of the plain. South Indian forces took it in 1284 and carried the relic away; the site was abandoned to monks soon after.
What survives is the stairway. A steep ornamental flight climbs the rock face to a doorway, flanked by carved lions, guardstones and a pierced stone window now in the Colombo museum. It is among the finest pieces of medieval Sinhalese stonework and it stands in open country with a caretaker, a small museum and almost nobody else.
