Airport to Minneriya: what to expect
Four hours north-east of the terminal. Minneriya National Park surrounds a reservoir built in the 3rd century AD by King Mahasen, and the tank is the entire reason the park matters.
Between roughly July and October, as the dry season draws the water down, fresh grass emerges on the exposed bed and elephants come from across the surrounding forest to feed on it. Several hundred gather at once. It is documented as the largest seasonal concentration of wild Asian elephants anywhere, and it happens in open grassland where you can actually see them.
Outside those months the herds disperse and Minneriya becomes an ordinary park. We will tell you honestly whether your dates fall inside the window, and if they do not, whether Kaudulla next door or Udawalawe further south would serve you better.

When is the elephant Gathering at Minneriya?
Roughly July to October, peaking in August and September. The timing follows the water level in the tank rather than the calendar, so it shifts year to year. Outside that window the herds disperse into the surrounding forest.
Minneriya or Kaudulla — which should I book?
Whichever the elephants are actually in that week. They move between the two as water levels change. Honest operators check before booking rather than defaulting to Minneriya because it is the famous name, and we do ask.
How long is a Minneriya safari?
Around three hours, usually leaving in mid-afternoon so you are on the tank bed as the light drops and the herds come out. Morning drives are possible but afternoon consistently produces more.
