Minneriya National Park
Several hundred wild elephants converging on the bed of a 1,700-year-old reservoir. It is the largest seasonal gathering of Asian elephants recorded anywhere, and it happens half an hour from Sigiriya.
Why Minneriya is worth your time
King Mahasen built the Minneriya tank in the 3rd century AD to irrigate the dry zone, and seventeen centuries later it is still doing that — and doing something he cannot have anticipated. As the dry season draws the water down between July and October, fresh grass springs up on the exposed lake bed, and elephants come out of the surrounding forest to eat it.
They come in numbers that are hard to believe until you see them. Several hundred at once, in open grassland, in daylight, with calves. Researchers have documented it as the largest seasonal concentration of wild Asian elephants anywhere in the world, and the term everyone uses for it — the Gathering — is not a marketing invention.
The rest of the year, Minneriya is an ordinary park with a resident population and a lot of birds. We will always tell you honestly whether your dates fall inside the window, and if they do not, whether Kaudulla, Hurulu or Udawalawe would give you a better morning.
The things worth stopping for
The Gathering itself
July to October on the receding tank bed. Herds arrive through the afternoon and the numbers build towards dusk, which is why afternoon drives beat morning ones here.
Calves
The gathering is a social event as much as a feeding one — herds meet, young males test each other, and calves are everywhere. It is the best place in Sri Lanka to watch elephant family behaviour.
The tank
A working reservoir from 300 AD, ringed by forest, with dead trees standing in the shallows and pelicans and painted storks along the edges.
Birdlife
Over 160 species. Serpent eagles and grey-headed fish eagles over the water, painted storks, spot-billed pelicans and large flocks of cormorants.
Kaudulla next door
Half an hour north and connected to Minneriya by an elephant corridor. When Minneriya's water returns, the herds often move here — a good operator checks first.
Hurulu Eco Park
The year-round fallback, open when the other two are between seasons. Drier and less scenic, but the elephants are real and wild.

Do this
- Take the afternoon drive — the herds build through the day
- Come in August or September for the peak of the Gathering
- Ask which park the elephants are actually in that week
- Bring a lens of 200mm or more; the herds are often mid-distance
- Base in Habarana, half an hour away, rather than driving from Kandy
Know this first
- Outside July–October the Gathering disperses and this becomes an ordinary park
- Jeep numbers at peak season are significant, though milder than Yala
- Some drivers push too close to herds with calves — a good one holds back
- Wild elephants use the roads here after dark; night driving needs real care
How to reach Minneriya
Four hours north-east of the terminal through Kurunegala and Dambulla. Almost nobody drives here directly from a flight — the park is normally visited from Habarana or Sigiriya, both within half an hour.
Safari jeeps collect from hotels in Habarana, Sigiriya and Polonnaruwa. The afternoon pickup is usually around 2:30pm, putting you on the tank bed for the last two hours of light.

Minneriya — frequently asked
When is the elephant Gathering at Minneriya?
Roughly July to October, peaking in August and September. It follows the water level in the tank rather than the calendar, so the timing shifts year to year. Outside that window the herds disperse into surrounding forest and numbers drop sharply.
Should I do a morning or afternoon safari at Minneriya?
Afternoon. Herds emerge from the forest through the day and the numbers on the tank bed peak in the last two hours of light. Morning drives here are consistently quieter than afternoon ones, which is the opposite of Yala.
How much does a Minneriya safari cost?
Around US$ 35 to 55 per person including park fees and a shared jeep. A private jeep costs more but lets you stay where the herds are rather than moving with a group. Fees are set in rupees and rise most years.
Minneriya, Kaudulla or Hurulu — which is best?
Whichever holds the elephants that week. They move between Minneriya and Kaudulla as water levels change, and Hurulu is the year-round fallback. Ask before booking; operators who default to Minneriya because it is the famous name are not doing you a favour.
