The Southern Expressway now runs almost the whole way to Matara, which makes this a genuinely quick two and three quarter hours despite the distance. The last few kilometres drop you into a busy provincial town rather than a resort strip.
Matara is not a beach destination in the way Mirissa is — it is a real working town with a Dutch star fort, a long sea wall, a temple on an islet reached by a footbridge, and the best transport connections in the deep south. Many guests use it as a base for Dickwella and Talalla, or as the last stop before turning inland for Udawalawe.

Is Matara worth staying in?
As a base, yes — it is central for the deep south, well connected and much cheaper than the beach towns. As a holiday destination in itself it is modest; most travellers stay in Mirissa, Dickwella or Talalla and pass through Matara.
How far is Matara from Mirissa?
About 30 minutes west along the coast road. Weligama is 20 minutes, Dickwella 30 minutes east, and Tangalle around 45 minutes. Everything on this stretch of coast is close together.
Does the price change for a late-night arrival?
