Colombo Airport to Kataragama Taxi
One of the few places on earth sacred to Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims at once — and a short hop from the Yala gates.
Airport to Kataragama: what to expect
Four and a half hours south-east, expressway to Hambantota and then inland past Tissamaharama. The last stretch runs through dry forest that is genuine elephant country — the warning signs on this road are not decorative.
Kataragama is a pilgrimage town rather than a tourist one. The Ruhunu Maha Kataragama Devalaya draws Buddhist, Hindu and Muslim pilgrims, and the evening puja — drumming, offerings of fruit carried in on trays, oil lamps — is one of the more genuinely moving things you can witness in Sri Lanka. The Esala festival in July and August fills the town entirely.

Tissamaharama
Fifteen minutes back west, with the ancient tank and most of the area's accommodation.
Yala and Kumana
Kataragama sits between the two parks, which makes it an unusual safari base.
Colombo Airport to Kataragama — FAQ
What time is the puja at Kataragama?
The main ceremonies are usually around 4:30am, 10:30am and 6:30pm, with the evening one drawing the biggest crowd. Dress modestly, remove shoes and hats, and expect it to be a religious occasion rather than a performance.
Is Kataragama a good base for Yala?
It is workable — the park's Katagamuwa entrance is close — but most safari operators and accommodation are concentrated in Tissamaharama, 15 minutes west. Stay in Tissa for the jeeps and visit Kataragama in the evening.
When is the Kataragama festival?
The Esala festival falls in July or August depending on the lunar calendar and runs for around two weeks, ending with a fire-walking ceremony. Accommodation across the whole region books out, so tell us early if your dates are near it.
