Airport to Hiriketiya: what to expect
The Southern Expressway takes you to Matara in a little over two hours, then it is 35 minutes east through Dickwella. Three hours in total, which is less than most people expect for somewhere this far down the coast.
Hiriketiya went from unknown to fully booked in about five years. The bay is small and almost enclosed, with a sandy-bottomed beginner wave on the western side and a sharper reef break on the eastern point. Around it: a dense cluster of surf cafes, yoga shalas and villas. It is lovely, and it is no longer a secret — book early in high season.

Is Hiriketiya good for learning to surf?
The inside of the bay is one of the friendlier beginner waves on the south coast — sandy bottom, short paddle, and instructors on the beach. The outside right is a reef break and a different proposition entirely.
When is the best season for Hiriketiya?
November to April, when the south-west monsoon has passed and the water is cleanest. The bay works in most conditions because of its shape, but the peak months are also the busiest, so accommodation goes early.
How busy does it get?
Very, between December and March. The bay is small and the beach fills. If you want the same coast with more space, Dickwella, Talalla and Tangalle are all within half an hour and we can suggest which fits your dates.
