Colombo Airport to Wilpattu Taxi

Three and a half hours north of the terminal, through Puttalam. Wilpattu is the largest national park in Sri Lanka, and for thirty years it was closed by the civil war, which is why it still receives a fraction of Yala's visitors.

The name means 'land of lakes', and that is the defining feature: around sixty natural sand-rimmed depressions called villus fill with rainwater and draw animals into the open. The park is dense dry-zone forest rather than open scrub, so sightings take longer and require patience — but you will often be the only vehicle there when they happen.

Leopards are resident and reasonably numerous. Sloth bears are seen more reliably here than anywhere else in the country. There are elephants, spotted deer, buffalo and crocodiles, and the birdlife around the villus is excellent.
